The Phares: The Name Describes the Price
The Phares is located in the Highlands, an awesome part of Birmingham's Southside, and my favorite part about living here is either the spaciousness of the living room and bedrooms or how pet-friendly the complex is.
However, the building was built in the 1920s, and the combination of the lack of central air with the poorly designed kitchen/bathroom in our unit was difficult to deal with, especially in the summer and winter. Additionally, there are no complex amenities to speak of other than a... general laundry room with poor machines.
That being said, the price is very reasonable, and you're in walking distance from many fantastic places along with a 24/7 grocery store (Western Market) right next door. Each individual unit is different, so I definitely recommend at least giving The Phares a look.
