Wouldn't Recommend

While it is a classic old San Francisco building, more and more the emphasis is on old. The elevator goes out frequently (it was out close to 3 months at the end of last year), and they turn off the water to apartments 2 to 3 times a month for hours at a time. Because of old wiring, internet options are limited and you compete for bandwidth with your neighbors, which is not ideal in this current environment of remote work and streaming entertainment. Only see all of these problems getting... significantly worse in the next few months.

And the neighborhood has deteriorated significantly in the past few years. It was always Tenderloin adjacent, but the Tenderloin has expanded to where it pretty much engulfs the building. Property theft is up, and several times a week one needs to ask people shooting up or smoking to leave the front entryway. Noise levels have also gotten much higher both inside and outside the building. More people screaming in the streets (through windows that do little to keep noise out, when they are not contributing to it from rattling), and the units themselves are not sound-proofed in any way, so hopefully you have considerate neighbors. Only see these all getting worse when the recently-approved homeless shelter opens a couple doors down (another one opened a year ago one block away and neighborhood has seen noticeable increase in drug use and crime since).

And if you ignore all this and move in anyway, enjoy your apartment as much as you can at the very beginning, because the building management will NEVER do anything to help keep up your apartment moving forward. They will re-furnish vacant units (of which there are a lot, further reducing the safety of the building) in hopes of getting high rents from people moving in, but once they have you they have no interest in doing anything to keep your unit from deteriorating over time. More than 15 years in and they have never approved even a new paint job.

It is sad - would have recommended this building maybe 10 years ago (maybe even 5 years ago) but to see the level the management has let it slide is disappointing. Like many other people from the building, will likely be moving out sooner rather than later. Tired of the crime that has hit the building, and the management's disinterest in doing anything to make for a better living situation.
