we loved this complex. Before the incessant construction, increase in fees, & intrusion of management into residents' living spaces, this was a gem. Affordable, well-located, with a thriving community feel. We were charmed by the stray cats, the Christmas lights & flamingos on people's porches, and the general vibe of suburban tranquility, nestled in trees, despite being minutes from one of the busiest intersections in the city. We were willing to overlook the issues with the apartment itself... (not level, poorly insulated [our power bill has never been lower than 120$ for two people, 1b], outdated& poorly maintained appliances, floor damage, rusty, painted-over bathtub) in order to stay in what we thought was a welcoming diverse community.
Within a year of living here, the trees were all cut down. The leasing office was gutted, sitting empty as an eyesore for well over 6 months while construction continued day & night, & restricted our access to the amenities we were continually being charged for, monthly. After that, our water bill nearly doubled within 2 months with no increase in usage. We had to battle with management for months to get this issue resolved, and without ceremony, after the 7th complaint, our water bill was miraculously back to the rate it was when we moved in.
Now we receive emails about inspections that belie the entire reason WE as prospective renters fell in love this place - it seemed like somewhere people actually called HOME. You could see the human touch and feel the warmth from elaborate decorations on peoples' porches. It stood in stark contrast to so many of the other apartments we had seen. It was a potential home, not a sterile building.
So we have: lackluster amenities, appliances from 25 years ago, & the inherent issues with the apartment itself (for example, cabinet door handles fall off when youre in the other room. all of the "porcelain" in our bathroom was painted over when we moved in, and within two weeks most of the paint had chipped off & clogged our drain leaving a cracking, rusty tub. When brought up to management AND maintenance, were told it's an aesthetic issue. Also, the lock on the back sliding door has been nonfunctional since our first week here.)
it has been unbelievably disheartening to watch this community transform from a homey, budget-friendly, family-friendly neighborhood, into a soulless corporatized money-machine with no regard for the residents outside of how they can profit from them.
