If I could give this place zero stars I would. I wrote a review 4 years ago when my daughter lived here to attend NIU and it was bad then. Now 4 years later she has a ding on her credit report saying she owes $1,046 in damages! When they left Hunter Star 4 girls were living there. One of the girls had a puppy on the basement bedroom and was never home. The puppy destroyed the BASEMENT unit. The rest of the units were clean. Hunter Star had that girl sign an agreement stating she was responsible... for the damages. Now 4 years later they are holding two other the other girls liable. My daughter can’t rent a new place now because this is ruining her credit! They already kept their security deposit as well!! They do not care about the college kids. It’s all about money to them! They’ve thrown away the documents the girl signed and now my daughter and the other girl are suffering because of it. Do not let your college aged kids rent here!!

Property Manager at Hunter Star Properties responded to this review
Hi Francesca. Unfortunately, as stated per our lease, it is a joint lease. The unit is a whole, tenants do not sign individual leases for rooms of a unit. The three tenants signed the joint lease stating they would all be held responsible as a whole... for any damages. Unfortunately, due to the fact there was an illegal animal in the apartment that caused the damages, the tenants were all held responsible for these damages. We do not, nor have we ever, created any documents stating only one person would be held responsible for damages due to our leasing agreement stating leases are joint. Since all the tenants were aware of the illegal animal in the unit, as those units are not pet friendly, they were held responsible for the damages in the basement regardless of whose animal it truly was. The balance on the account was due to what needed to be repaired. Based on the move-out conditions paperwork we have on file, only one of the tenants signed off on it during their move-out, indicating only one tenant was present for the move-out inspection, or all tenants would've signed they were present. In this case, based on what has been told to us, if everyone would've been here the day of their move-out to sign an alleged form that only one person would be held responsible, we would've had to completely create that documentation as we have no such paperwork, and all of the tenants would've signed the move-out conditions sheet stating all the damages that were found in the unit. Based on this, what we are being told does not add up. We apologize that you feel so strongly about this, but the illegal animal in the unit was the prime cause of the damages, and due to it being a joint lease, everyone was held responsible for all the repairs that needed to be done.

THIS PLACE IS GARBAGE LIVE ANYWHERE ELSE
They've towed by car twice in 5 months despite having a valid permit and forced me to pay $200 each time. There are no working laundry facilities despite their advertising. There was rotting food sitting at the front door for 2 months, it smelled so bad you had to hold your breath in the halls. Find ANYWHERE else to live!

DONT DO IT UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES
If I could rate them zero stars that’s what it would be. 1st mistake they wouldn’t let me see my official unit until the day I moved in only the model. Move in day I felt like they were pranking me the apartment was horrible. If I didn’t pay security deposit first and last month rent I would’ve looked at that mess and never moved in. It looked as if the tenants before me moved out an hour before I moved in. Nothing was done. They requested to get the carpet cleaned the day I moved in. I had to... move my things in on wet carpet. I was missing blinds , my garbage disposal in the kitchen sink was broken which had food in it causing nets to be all through my apartment. The management in the office doesn’t care at all. As soon as it got cold outside (Windy) mid November my hot water and heat would go out. Maintenance would come out whenever they felt like it , lite the furnace and the next day or two it would be out again. This lasted all the way until the summer so whatever the real issue was they never fixed it. I could go on and on about how terrible my living experience was here. I lived here about 9 months because I moved in September don’t have any kids pets etc. the apartment was left in the same condition I received it in and I was charged out of my security deposit for a screen door that I supposedly ripped. That screen door had been there for years there’s no way I could have did damage like that in the short time I lived there. I had no proof I didn’t do it because when I moved in I didn’t take pictures of a screen door and the lady in office didn’t have it marked on her list which she knew that apartment was exactly the same. I thought they would at least take $100 out my security deposit nope they took basically the whole thing. Out of an $815 security deposit I was left $237 THIS WHOLE EXPERIENCE WAS A NIGHTMARE

Do not live here!!!
I am appalled by the tone of the management at Hunter Star Properties. I have been contacting the office about the back door to my building being broken for the past month and a half. Finally, I asked for a manager to handle the situation, and I got a voicemail from Tom four days later. When I called back, I described the situation, and he claimed to be completely unaware of the situation, and said someone would be there to fix it soon. When I asked how I would be compensated for the time and... trouble, he rudely stated that he would not be making it up at all. I calmly said that I would be in contact with the Better Business Bureau and I would be writing a poor review. He said, "you do that," and hung up on me. I am contacting my lawyer on this matter, and unless I receive an apology and some sort of compensation, I will NEVER recommend them to anyone I know. Unbelievable.
