Next to Salvation Army

I lived here for some years but since property manager left January 2023, there has been a lot of issues. Residents are required to have RENTERS INSURANCE. (Hint!)It's a very old building that looks really good on the outside, but inside quick patch up fixes, paint bubbles off the walls. Next to Salvation Army, homeless camp tents alongside of the parking entry -almost to the end of the street. Cops unable to keep them away. Rent is much higher than its worth, although key entry to individual... building units. As resident, keep all payment & document records in safe box, in case of any technical errors. This has saved us.

AWESOME PROPERTY MANAGER

Our newest property manager is absolutely AWESOME. She truly cares about the tenants. She addresses issues as they arise and keeps the tenants informed of anything and everything that will affect her tenants. She's THE best property manager we've EVER had. I have lived here for over 20 years and have seen property managers come and go, some OK, some horrible and a some that weren't worth diddly. Julie is AWESOME!!! She is the epitome of of what a property manager should be.

Not worth the cost of "low" rent

This building is old. That's fine. I've lived in old buildings. But this building is also poorly managed and poorly maintained. That's not fine.

The bathrooms do not have ventilation. There is mold in the drywall. No matter how much you clean and bleach, the mold will bloom back up. The bathroom has a window but it's directly in the shower and doesn't have clouded glass. The safety bar in the shower is useless for anyone who actually needs it (too high up, vertical instead of horizontal). The...
shower head is mounted to the safety bar rather than being mounted on the wall.

The rest of apartment is "okay". The walls are cracked and repainted over and over. But I had new appliances, new linoleum, new carpet. The new carpet was installed poorly and I had to clean up the mess left by whoever installed it. This was a reoccurring problem any time someone came to fix anything -- I had to clean up the mess. Slow drain? Expect to come home and clean up the sludge they leave behind. Resurface your tub? Expect to clean up the residue.

Maintenance turned over four times in less than two years. Some were better than others but they all had their faults. Tickets will get closed without the work being done. Tickets may sit open and unfixed for months. Maintenance may tell you they need to call someone to fix a problem but never make the call. When they do the job, they may not even tell you they came in and fixed it. If they do fix it, it might be half-assed.

The property manager is just as unreliable. He manages other properties and is rarely in the office. He rolls in late, leaves early, and he's only there three times a week if you're lucky. If you work a standard 9-5, you will never see him. Are you having a package delivered? Better hope he's there. Unless you want to prop your building door open which will result in the property manager scolding you for being a security risk. Either be there to accept packages, or find another solution because the management can't be trusted to actually be in the office to receive them. Almost every package I had sent to me got rescheduled to a different day because no one was at the office to accept it.

No bugs, never felt unsafe at night. But I'm a near freak and have lived in worse neighborhoods. If you have nowhere else to live, this place is an option. It's not great. The staff is incredibly unreliable and the bathroom will always be a problem. But at least it's a place to live.

Not Worth the Money

The apartment building is very old (over 100 years). There were absolutely NO modern conveniences when I moved in. The last improvements that were made (prior to Comcast running their cable in 2012 or 2013) were the telephone lines in 1930. I had to pay to have phone lines run in my apartment.

There are 6 washers and 6 dryers for 60 units; virtually no storage in the units, unless you bring your own. There are two glass front cupboards and a little cupboard over the refrigerator, which you...
can't reach. There are cabinets around the kitchen, which you use to put pots, pans, storage containers, etc. in, but nothing for storing food. I had to buy a cabinet to store my non-perishable food items in.

You have to schlep your laundry up and down steep cement stairs, then sit and wait if someone else is using the laundry facilities, OR you can take it to a laundry mat, none of which are downtown. The closest one is on Kitsap Way up near the Taco Bell.

My rent has gone from $675 (which is criminal) to $835 (which is felonious) in one month. Now, they just informed me that they don't pay any utilities anymore, which they did until October of this year. So, basically, the fewer apartments that are rented out, the more tenants pay for their water and sewage (even if we're not home during the day using any utilities). I have been paying $25 a month towards the water and sewage bill, but garbage was always provided. I have one bag of garbage a month. I'm gone from 5:45 AM until at least 4:00 PM every day of the week, and I'm not even home on weekends. So, basically, those of us who work will be paying for the tenants who are home all day. How nice!
