Attending Texas Tech University
With more than 700 student clubs and organizations at Texas Tech, there's something for everyone to be involved in. If you're a band person, Texas Tech has the Goin' Band from Raiderland, a 450-member marching band that first performed in 1925. If you're more of a sports person, Texas Tech has that, too. The 60,000-seat Jones AT&T Stadium has been the home of Texas Tech’s football team, the Red Raiders, since 1947. The incredibly memorable Texas Tech mascot, the Masked Rider, has been an official mascot since 1954. Texas Tech also has plenty of traditions, from the breathtaking Carol of Lights to the legends surrounding the iconic sculpture Riding into the Sunset. No matter what you're into, Texas Tech has you covered.
Living In Lubbock, Texas
Lubbock is part of the High Plains of Texas, which produces about a quarter of the nation’s cotton crop. Lubbock is in the northwest of the state, so it’s not very close to the big cities of Texas, but you can make (relatively) short road trips to Amarillo and Roswell, New Mexico. Texas Tech is a huge part of Lubbock’s culture, and businesses tend to come from all over the area to recruit students. The community is also a huge part of Texas Tech's draw: "West Texas' hospitality is dominant on campus," reports one student. Texas Tech is really its own neighborhood within Lubbock. It's surrounded by multiple neighborhoods that add their own flair to the area, however. Arnett Benson, North and South Overton, Tech Terrace, Maxey Park, and Rush are the neighborhoods that border Texas Tech, and they're all common areas for students to hang out.
Staying Safe in Lubbock
When you're moving off campus, it's important to think about safety. Students and their parents can be equally worried, whether it's your first time living on your own or just the first time you've lived off campus in Lubbock. Thankfully, Texas Tech has a police department that works tirelessly to provide a safe and secure environment. The Texas Tech Police Department is available 24 hours a day. TTPD also maintains 120 Blue Phones. These are direct lines to the police department, placed strategically around the campus, in case of an emergency. Finally, full-time TTPD officers can give presentations about crime prevention to students and faculty. ForRentUniversity.com also lets you sort apartments near Texas Tech for safety features, including parking lots and gated access.
Getting Around Lubbock
Lubbock has an extensive public transport system in Citibus, which runs throughout Lubbock on a fare system. Citibus also provides service to and from Texas Tech. These routes go from nearby apartment complexes to the campus, so you don't have to worry about long walks or scheduling rideshare services.
Where Do Texas Tech University Students Live?
Maxey Park
Unsurprisingly, Maxey Park is based around an actual park, boasting a lake and the Maxey Community Center. The center provides year-round leisure classes for everyone, outdoor fitness equipment, and various special events. Maxey Park also has a thriving fishing community, and Maxey Park Lake is the place to be. Texas Parks officials restock the lake with catfish regularly. If you want to use your home as a center for leisure, you might want to consider Maxey Park.
Arnett Benson
Arnett Benson sits to the north of the Texas Tech campus and has lots of undergrad and graduate students. The neighborhood is right next to The Rawls Course at Texas Tech, so this is a great place to be if you love golf. You’ll find lots of apartment complexes here along 4th Street and Indiana Avenue. At that corner, you'll also find Blue Sky Texas for famous burgers, fries, and shakes.
North Overton
Back in the early 1900s, there was no North and South Overton – it was all one section, known as Overton. Over time, however, the communities became so distinct that the neighborhoods separated. North Overton has been renovated and is now one of the trendiest places in Lubbock. For cutting-edge restaurants and some of the most modern apartments, try out North Overton. You’ll find the Centre at Overton Park complex here along with the landmark Spanky’s for burgers and "too-cold-to-hold" beer.
