Living In Athens, Georgia
The University of Georgia is located in Athens, Georgia, right next to the Five Points neighborhood, in the Athens-Clarke County metropolitan area. Athens is suburban, though there are definitely areas of the city that are more populated and exciting – and areas where it's easy to relax and de-stress after a long finals week. It's only an hour-long drive up to Atlanta, making for easy getaways, and Athens sits on a long stretch of beautiful low, rolling hills known as the Piedmont. With football being as prominent as unique coffee shops, there's definitely something for everyone in this lovely city. Five Points, located on the southwest edge of campus, is a great neighborhood for University of Georgia off-campus living. Many historic homes exist on the main thoroughfare of this neighborhood, lending a calm elegance to the area that permeates homes that aren't even part of this historic portion.
Staying Safe in Athens, Georgia
When students move off campus, they may worry about their safety, and their parents often worry even more. It's understandable to be concerned about your safety in a new town, especially if this is your first time living on your own off campus. However, the University of Georgia understands that you will have worries and questions, and it does its best to keep you safe so you and your loved ones don't have to worry. The University of Georgia has its own police department that serves the school. The large patrol division patrols campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in vehicles, on bicycles, and on foot. In addition, there are plenty of safety services specifically geared toward college and university students. The University of Georgia has an extensive list of services that students, both on and off campus, can use to make sure they stay safe. UGA also has information on reporting any crime that does happen. You can even call the Athens-Clarke County Police Department to check specific crime rates in the neighborhood you're looking at, straight from the source. ForRentUniversity.com has more tips on safety and also allows you to sort apartments near UGA with safety features, so you can have a great time living in Athens without worrying about your safety.
Where Do University of Georgia Students Live?
Five Points
Five Points is likely the most common neighborhood for off-campus life at the University of Georgia because of its proximity to campus. It's situated directly on the southwest corner of the university, which means you could end up with a five-minute walk to your early morning classes. The closeness of this neighborhood to the university has also changed the way the neighborhood operates in some ways. Five Points has plenty of coffee shops, unique restaurants, and incredible bars, allowing anyone to find something to suit their tastes.
Normaltown
Don't let the name fool you; this place is anything but normal. Plenty of established Athenians who have lived in the city for years have found their favorite restaurants, bars, and nightlife centers on the streets of Normaltown, and it has served them well. It's a bit further away from campus than Five Points, but considering that the university is all but part of the neighborhood, that doesn't mean much. An interesting bit of trivia for classic rock 'n' roll fans: Normaltown is the birthplace of the American new wave band the B-52s!
Chicopee-Dudley
When you're enjoying off-campus life at the University of Georgia, sometimes you just need a quiet spot to hang out and enjoy the beautiful Piedmont hills. The Chicopee-Dudley neighborhood, which encompasses most of Athens' eastern portion, is a great place to live if you enjoy the quiet life and aren't very interested in the nightlife and shopping of more urbanized areas. Parks and trails abound in this area, and the interesting restaurants and stores that do line the more populated streets are sure to catch your eye, even as an overworked student living in Athens. It's worth the slightly longer commute if you're more interested in hanging out with yourself than hanging out in a bar.
