Living In Athens, Georgia

Athens is suburban, though there are definitely areas of the city that are more populated and exciting – and areas where it's easy to relax and de-stress after a long finals week. It's only an hour-long drive up to Atlanta, making for easy getaways, and Athens sits on a long stretch of beautiful low, rolling hills known as the Piedmont. With football being as prominent as unique coffee shops, there's definitely something for everyone in this lovely city. Where Do University of Georgia Students Live?

Five Points

Five Points is likely the most common neighborhood for off-campus life at the University of Georgia because of its proximity to campus. It's situated directly on the southwest corner of the university, which means you could end up with a five-minute walk to your early morning classes. The closeness of this neighborhood to the university has also changed the way the neighborhood operates in some ways. Five Points has plenty of coffee shops, unique restaurants, and incredible bars, allowing anyone to find something to suit their tastes.

Normaltown

Don't let the name fool you; this place is anything but normal. Plenty of established Athenians who have lived in the city for years have found their favorite restaurants, bars, and nightlife centers on the streets of Normaltown, and it has served them well. It's a bit further away from campus than Five Points, but considering that the university is all but part of the neighborhood, that doesn't mean much. An interesting bit of trivia for classic rock 'n' roll fans: Normaltown is the birthplace of the American new wave band the B-52s!

Chicopee-Dudley

When you're enjoying off-campus life at the University of Georgia, sometimes you just need a quiet spot to hang out and enjoy the beautiful Piedmont hills. The Chicopee-Dudley neighborhood, which encompasses most of Athens' eastern portion, is a great place to live if you enjoy the quiet life and aren't very interested in the nightlife and shopping of more urbanized areas. Parks and trails abound in this area, and the interesting restaurants and stores that do line the more populated streets are sure to catch your eye, even as an overworked student living in Athens. It's worth the slightly longer commute if you're more interested in hanging out with yourself than hanging out in a bar.
