Affordable City Living

This apartment is not for anyone who doesn’t want to feel like they live in a city. Personally, I think that’s the charm of the place- I am calmed by the sound of the light rail passing by at night and I adore being across the alley from Ax Man Surplus!

That being said, I do think it is a rather densely populated area and being close to Snelling and University will show that; I have had experiences of going to put my garbage in the dumpster to find people digging through it (you do you, I...
wasn’t using any of the stuff in it and I’m glad it’s finding a better home!). Because of this digging, the dumpster often has piles of garbage around it. To be very clear, this is not the fault of the tenants or Equimax. I have even seen members of the Equimax team out there with gloves putting trash back in the dumpster.

I really enjoyed the community I was able to cultivate at this apartment, specifically with the people who lived in my building (5 units out of the 15ish on the property). We often had each other over for dinner and I knew I could count on them when I locked myself out or ran out of sugar while baking!

I also joined a couple of Neighborhood groups on Facebook (Buy Nothing and others) and was able to meet a lot of amazing community members that way. This area is full of good, caring humans.

It is absolutely worth paying for a parking spot, street parking is plentiful but being next door to the Turf Club and near Allianz Field can make it difficult sometimes.

I really wish my unit had a dishwasher, but that was something I knew it didn’t have going in. Being on the first floor, we had some pest problems in the warmer months (cockroaches in the kitchen, occasional mice in the bedroom) but Equimax‘s maintenance team was kind and responsive!

Despite being on the first floor, I always felt safe leaving my windows open overnight in the summer. As a female, I also always felt safe going to and from my car.

Also we only pay for electricity I think which is AMAZING and (in looking for other apartments) not a deal you’ll find anywhere else. I think our place averaged $30ish a month for electricity.
I also enjoy that we can pay rent online and split it amongst ourselves easily.

Overall, I felt safe and valued as a tenant and wouldn’t trade my experience here for the world (I’m moving due to a change in jobs!). I am marking 4/5 stars to bring attention to the aspects of general city living that I think are important for prospective tenants to be aware of.

Good landlord, terrible location

I lived here for a couple of years. While it wasn’t the best neighborhood to begin with - once summer 2020 happened it went downhill. More shootings nearby on Snelling, someone broke into the apt I was renting (thankfully no one was home so no one was hurt, but still to be violated in that way left me feeling unsafe to stay there). If you are a single woman living in the city - no bueno on this area. In fact, if you have any way to get out of this godforsaken area of MN do it! There’s nothing... left worth staying for. Equimax though was great. Just be a responsible adult (pay your rent on time and keep your apt clean) and you will have no issues getting your deposit back. I would of given the property 1 star if it wasn’t for the good experience I had with Equimax.

We are so sorry that you had a bad experience with the neighborhood. We take pride in providing clean, quiet and safe buildings for our residents. As a matter of fact, from 2013 to 2020 we did not have a single police call to Fry St Station. We... did go through some challenging times in 2020 as did ever other urban neighborhood in the Twin Cities. None of the problems you experienced had anything to do with neighboring tenants and those tough times have had a silver lining in creating a stronger sense of community among all of the tenants at Fry St station. I am happy to report that things have settled back down to normal levels and the area seems to be back in high demand.
